Abstract

Objective To study the mortality and survival of AIDS patients in the Basque Country, by analyzing changes in survival throughout time. Design Retrospective study of adult and adolescent AIDS patients declared at the Basque Country AIDS Prevention and Control Plan between 1984 and 1995. Results A total number of 3104 patients was registered, of whom 2070 (66.7%) had expired at deadline study date. Median survival was 24 months. Estimated survival was 68.7% at 1st year and 38.4% at 3rd year. Significant differences were found according to the following factors: age, transmission mechanism, AIDS-defining disease, and the time of diagnosis, varying from 7 months for those diagnosed before 1988 to 28 months for those diagnosed between 1991-93. In multivariate analysis, the only variables with independent prognostic value were age and AIDS-defining disease. Conclusions The increase in the survival is diagnosis-specific, fundamentally by the incorporation of the extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The only variables with independent prognostic value influencing survival are age and initial AIDS-defining disease.
