Abstract

In July 1913 a tender was opened in Vitoria with the aim of selecting a project to build a memorial to the Battle of Vitoria, which took place on 21 June 1813. Among basic requirements, it was established that it had to commemorate the victory of the Allies against the French army and highlight the fgure of the local hero Lieutenant General Miguel Ricardo de Álava. Seven projects were presented and the winner was Gabriel Borrás with the slogan “Si vis pacem para bellum”. Borrás stayed within the realistic trend. The result was a set where plastic, material and color, as well as historical and allegorical iconography harmoniously melted
