Abstract

This article aims to analyse commercial relations between Álava and Navarra between thecenturies of Late Middle Ages and the first half of the 16th century. Despite the politicalvicissitudes suffered by both territories, in 1199 and 1512, commercial relations did not cometo an end, but rather they were consolidated and strengthened. This commerce was strategicfor both territories, since it allowed for the meeting of demand for products in which each ofthem was deficient. Said commerce benefited all layers of society, however, it also served asa cover for intense smuggling and illegal commerce. Those fraudulent activities took placein the heat of an elaborate discourse which justified the privileged situation of the borderterritories, always under the threat that if such privileges did not exist, the royal incomeswould be affected.
