Resumen

Over two decades have passed since the concern about language transmission through the family was voiced in Basque sociolinguistics. At that time Joshua Fishman and José María Sánchez-Carrión called for attention to be devoted to the importance that transmission has in the future of minority languages, and since then various initiatives have been started to tackle the challenge of transmission. Among these initiatives those of a practical nature (transmission programmes) prevailed, but attempts to reflect on transmission also featured. This paper seeks to review what has been done but without evaluating what has been achieved. In addition, the second part of the paper will be calling for the need for a new way of understanding and defining transmission. This proposal stresses the "new" task that families will need to carry out in connection with the language, this being linked to the notion of "Family Language Policy".
