Abstract

In this study we present a magnetostratigraphic study of the Tudela Formation, which is composed of lacustrine, palustrine and distal aluvial facies that represent the Miocene sedimentary filling of the central sector of the western Ebro Basin. Our magnetostratigraphic results enable accurate dating of the Tudela Formation, whose lower and upper boundaries can be dated at ca. 20.7 Ma (base of chron C6An.2.n) and ca. 15.5 Ma (chron C5Br), respectively. These results also allow the dating of several Ramblian (MN3) mammal fossil localities from the Tudela Formation, and therefore to give the first steps into the calibration of Lower Miocene European mammal biozones.
