Abstract

The object of this article is to highlight how Arantxa Urretabizkaia has treated the topic of motherhood in her narrative work. Thus the mothers appearing in the novels Zergatik panpox (1979), Koaderno gorria (1998) and Hiru Mariak (2010) and in the collection of short stories titled Aspaldian espero zaitudalako ez nago sekula bakarrik (1983) have been studied. First of all, we have constructed a theoretical framework of motherhood. In this respect, we have presented what present day feminist theory has said and established in relation to maternity. Subsequently, taking the feminist critique as our methodology, we have studied the literary protagonists of the narratives mentioned above. As the main result we can say that the representations of motherhood we have studied are not hegemonic, but rather al - ternative or emergent. We have found single mothers, older mothers, working or politically active mothers in these literary texts, in short, literary characters who have created new relationships. It is precisely those new relationships which could constitute a paradigm of new relationships between genders.
