Abstract

Healing in periodontal defect following flap surgery is a more complex process. In the last 20 years, a lot of research has been done to achive a complete restoration in structure and function of the periodontal tissues (periodontal regeneration) as a result of periodontal surgery. Recently, a number of biological response modifiers which regulate cell proliferation, motility and attachment have been discovered and characterized. The application of these proteins and growth factors may support periodontal regeneration. This article will now explain and review the growth factors, the bone morphogenetic proteins and other enamel derivative proteins that may play an important role in periodontal regeneration.
