The main feature of picture books is the interaction between words and images in one and the same book. Nevertheless, this article sets out to analyse picture books made up of illustrations alone without any need for words. On the basis of the term «silent picture book» coined by Teresa Durán, the aim is to list the features of the illustrated books that tell a story without any text at all. On the other hand, after identifying some of the biases generated by these story books, the qualities emanating from them are pointed out. And inally, a proposal is made in order to overcome the scarce presence of silent story books in the Basque literary system, which has resorted to the neighbouring literary systems, as language poses no obstacle. So some interesting picture books without words are highlighted below.
