Resumen
The accidental HCN intoxication resulting from the consumption of many plants is one of the main problems derived from free grazing and the native elaboration of feed in Latin America. The application of intravenous sodium thiosulfate is an effective and widespread treatment in the hydrocyanic intoxication. This paper proposes the use of crosslinked polymer matrix as a carrier for slow and controlled release of sodium thiosulfate to be applied in Latin American cattle as a preventive treatment in HCN poisoning. Acrylic hydrogels were synthesized and loaded with sodium thiosulfate. In vitro transdermal diffusion was tested in order to study the kinetics release of the drug. The effect of crosslinking and composition of synthesized networks was studied. The thiosulfate levels achieved in the diffusion measurements resulted near the optimal concentrations in the blood steadily over time. This fact demonstrated the potential of the polymer matrices for the application.
