Abstract

This study presents a number of approaches and new iconographic material for the analysis of one of the most widespread representations in medieval sculpture: la femme aux serpents, which was employed to illustrate the sin of lust and its punishment. Its antecedents, as has been pointed out by many specialists, come from images of Tellus in Roman iconography. The main purpose of this work is to analyse its iconographic evolution, and in particular its semantic transmutation.
