This article explores the interrelationship among scientific, ethical and religious elements through sustainability thinking from the 20th Century to the present. The first section of the article points to the interplay between the biosphere and the noosphere, conceptualized by the materialist geochemist Vernadsky and the catholic palaeontologist Teilhard de Chardin. The second section summarizes the Gaia theory and the recent program of the Earth System Science, through the Amsterdam Declaration on global change. Finally, the third section presents the ethical elements of the Earth Chart as a new philosophical challenge for the human being in a global world. The three sections and the described cases are tied in with the humankind’s relationship with Earth nowadays.
