Abstract

Attention is a very common concept in sport psychology. However, this does not mean that this multi-dimensional concept is well-defined and the procedures for the evaluation and training of attentional skills have been subjected to either conceptual or empirical evaluation. The purpose of this article is to review the research about attention in sport and summarise briefly what is known about the assessment of attentional processes in athletes and the efficacy of the psychological exercises and techniques alleged to improve athletes’ attention and concentration skills. The final section of the article explores some potentially fruitful new directions for further research in this field.
