Abstract

This study approaches the affective-emotional beliefs, attitudes and emotions held by first-year Primary Education students of the Bilbao Education Faculty of the Basque Country University towards geometry and arithmetic. The questionnaire employed to carry out the investigation: The Affectivity Scale towards geometry and arithmetic knowledge filled out by 123 students, 78 women, 43 men and 2 gender-neutral. The results of this survey show that future teaching professionals consider geometry and arithmetic to be a useful, though difficult, subject which is worth learning. There are no significant differences in terms of sexual identity, though the women perceived geometry and arithmetic to be more complicated than the men. It’s further confirmed that prior studies are important in terms of affective domain, with science and technology presenting a more positive affective-emotional domain towards geometry and arithmetic than other background studies.
