Abstract

My paper consists on the analysis of two anecdotes from early Chinese literature concerning laughter which are, however, intimately linked to the most tragic dimension of life: death. Inboth cases, and considering the context in which these anecdotes take place, laughter is clearly inappropriate since it occurs in situations dominated by seriousness and circumspection. In my paper I shall try to offer a complete reading on the meaning of this odd laughter, transiting from the death of laughter into the laughter of dead.
