Abstract
The current state of paleoenvironmental investigations on the early Upper Paleolithic, and especially during the Gravettian, does not allow an accurate characterization. The reason for this lack of information is multiple. First, we are recording the existence of sedimentary hiatuses affecting the Gravettian stratigraphic sequences, due to erosion. Moreover, the problem of absolute chronological seriation existing makes difficult the assignment of the samples within the global paleoenvironmental record. On the other hand, both the limitations inherent in each discipline, as the application of improper sampling techniques (eg, manual recovery of the micro-mammals remains), if they are made, reduce even more the available records with a good and continuous series since the beginning of the Aurignacian to the end of Solutrean.
