Abstract

In the context of lyrical singing teaching, metaphors, body language and new technologies are used as teaching tools. For this research, new educational resources are used, configured through visual images that relate sung sentences and sound placement. This work studies and analyses the efficacy of such images for their later implementation in singing class. Two sessions are prepared, with 30 singing students with varied vocal classification and trained in singing at the conservatory. We compare the interpretation of a musical fragment in a first session, with a second session in which the teacher uses these images along with verbal information. Twenty subjects (students and teachers) answer quantitatively and qualitatively one perceptive test out of the 60 corresponding auditions. Open-ended interviews are carried out afterwards with the participanting teachers. We analyse whether the students experience improvements in the four chosen criteria for the research: their execution, their using of support, their construction of legato and their distribution of the energy. The results show that the execution improves in the majority of students and that the images help improving the concentration for interpreting the musical play. We suggest the inclusion of these educational resources for future singing-teacher training programs.
