Abstract
This article is a biographical sketch of Sabino Arana (1865-1903), the founding father of Basque nationalism, in the first seventeen years of his life. It examines these aspects: his family, his exile in the French Basque Country during the last Carlist War, his studies at the Jesuit school in Orduña and his discovery of nationalism from his brother Luis in 1882, which would provide the origin of the first Aberri Eguna (Fatherland Day) in 1932. An unpublished text by Luis Arana is reproduced at the end.
