Abstract

In recent decades, poverty has increased among people who are employed. This brings into question the role of employment as the main mechanism for social inclusion. In-work poverty is obviously related to low-wage employment, and one of the main factors explaining the increase of the working poor is the profound changes suffered by the structure and functioning of labor markets. In addition, the increase of workers who are not able to live from their work independently or support their families, is related to the existing architecture of social protection in each country. This explains the significant differences in the incidence and the profile of the working poor across countries.
