Abstract

The level of abstraction of the language can be a way of transmiting and maintaining stereotypes, such as the Linguistic Intergroup Bias (Maass et al., 1989) proposes. In this study the differential use of the level of abstraction in language performed by two groups in conflict (HB and Gesto por la Paz) is analized when these groups give explanations to actions that can be congruent or incongruent with the ingroup. Using a 2 (congruency of action) x 2 (valence of the verbs used in the explanations) design, it will be analyzed whether the processes that underlie the Linguistic Intergroup Bias are motivational or cognitive. Finally, the results of the study are interpreted in reference to the different theories explaining the Linguistic Intergroup Bias, as well as to the socio-political context where both groups coexist.
