Abstract
We analyse the historical proposals of C. Echegaray and E. Labayru. Both authors proposed to apply the positive critical method to Basque historiography and using the new postulates to create new historiographical subjects referring to the Basque people. Their work was commented upon and criticised in the 1890s, at a time when general histories of Spain were being published, such as that under the auspices of Cánovas del Castillo for example. Facing these, histories of Spain emerged that were inspired in Republicanism, together with the publication of "regional Spain", which called for regional pluralism from traditionalist positions.
