Abstract

We are witnessing a gradual change from environmentalism based on political and scientific rationale (objectives and means) to emotional environmentalism based on the consumption of experiences through which reality is constructed. These experiences need not be experienced personally but rather consumed via the Internet or the communication media. As a consequence, political action understood as a collective experience is substituted by individual action —«the self»— as a line of action. This gives rise to post-politics, in which political ideas disappear leaving behind politics as a form of management by technocrats. Conflict, or political dispute, is repressed or concealed in the name of the greater good (the «environmental crisis») via technocratic management of politics. Any possibility of social change disappears.
