Abstract
This work presents the study of the extraction of the keratin from the wool of Latxa sheep (Ovis aries), original from Navarra and Basque Country, northern Spain, and hich wool has little textile worth. The extraction has been carried out through an extractive process using tioglycolic acid in basic media. The obtained keratin aqueous solutions have been characterized to determine the physico–chemical properties of keratin in aqueous media. The morphology of wool fibers through the extraction has been monitored by optical microscopy. The keratin in aqueous media has been characterized through static light scattering and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Films of keratin were prepared, which has been characterized though Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and DSC.
