Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the relative influence of interparental conflict and history of attachment on both, young adults´ current attachment mental representations (self-confidence and confidence in others) and current parent-child relationships. Participants were 241 young adults (M age = 21.68 years). Results indicated that young adults from highly-conflicted families report worse relationships with both parents and obtain lower scores on self-confidence than those from low-conflict families. Nevertheless, findings suggest that history of attachment is a better predictor of young adults´ affective relationships. Indeed, those securely attached reported more positive affective elationships. In addition, the lack of significant differences between low- and high-resolved levels of interparental conflict suggests that both are equally positive on young adults´ affective relationships. These results underscore the importance of analyzing history of attachment and of considering conflict resolution when determining the effects of interparental conflict.
