Zusammenfassung
Solving Physics problems is accepted as a necessary activity in order to evaluate university students' conceptual and procedural knowledge. In line with this we have attempted to identify the main characteristics of that procedural knowledge students need when solving pencil and paper problems. Moreover, we have evaluated to what extent students apply scientific methodology to solve problems. According to the results found, it might seem that students present serious deficiencies when they are guided into doing a qualitative analysis. This is partly due to their use of a type of reasoning that lacks relevant procedural contents.
