Resumen

In this article we will present the first glimpses of a larger research project we are involved in. The principal aim of this project is to reflect upon some aspects about migrations from the Basque Country abroad during the 16th-19th centuries. So far, the questions that historiography has made about this topic linked mostly with the travel. From our perspective, we will highlight other questions as the way migratory processes were performed, the destinations of the migrants, and the problems they use to have (to finance the travel and settlement in the new land, the problem of the language and others). The creation of associations used to be one of the most usual answers to face these problems; we will focus on one of the most importan Basque associations of this time: the one created in Madrid.
