Abstract

In 1979 the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country proclaimed Basque, together with Spanish, as an official language in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (ACBC). Later on, in 1982, the Basque Parliament, in good use of their new responsibilities, approved the Basic Law for the Normalization and Use of Basque, a basic pillar for the linguistic and cultural reconstruction of the Basque Country. In this law, the linguistic rights of all citizens were recognized and the aims and responsibilities of the public institutions were established, in order to lead to the normalization of Basque in the Basque Country. In this work, our aim is to analyze and evaluate the linguistic vitality of Basque through the examination of Sociolinguistic Map IV (2009), the data of which will be examined here, paying close attention to the analysis of variables of competence, use, familiar transmission and attitudes of Basque and its evolution during the last 25 years (1991-2006), especially in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country.
