The teaching staff and the student body of the Bilbao School of Engineering coincide in their definition of the teaching of engineering as a form of training which is strictly aimed at "enabling" and in which any components that are not purely technical are omitted. The "technical training" and "human training" are seen to be two dissociated realities, which implies not distinguishing or identifying those values that are implicit in acquiring certain knowledge, and technical skills. Hence, teaching in the School is described as being devoid of values. However, this axiological asepsis is by no means true. In the teaching of engineering their is a predominance of values of an instrumental nature concerning effectiveness and viability and also at a somewhat elitist and selective concept of the profession based on professional success and prestige.
