In 1920 the Bilbao City Council took an inusual decision in the municipal census: it asked people about their knowledge of Basque language. This decision provides us with a lot of data, and we can discover the number and characteristics of the Basque speakers. This work gives us the absolute amount (20.77% of the population knew the Basque language), and also other data: their provinces of origin, their distribution by districts and streets, occupation, sex, age, educational level and family structure.
