Resumen

El juego patológico es un trastorno de conducta con unos síntomas y criterios diagnósticos específicos. La tasa de prevalencia de este trastorno es alta y tiende a aumentar en el futuro. En este trabajo se revisan el concepto de juego patológico, los criterios diagnósticos, la epidemiología y los tipos de jugadores, así como los aspectos psicológicos implicados en el funcionamiento de las máquinas recreativas. Se estudian asimismo las variables de personalidad específicas. Se concluye que la reducción de un malestar fisiológico o de un estado de ánimo disfórico, junto con el "mecanismo de ejecución conductual", son las principales variables relacionadas con el juego patológico. Se señala también el papel desempeñado por las alteraciones cognitivas en el mantenimiento del juego y se indican, por último, algunas líneas de investigación futuras.
