Abstract

The transition to democracy in the Basque Country involved the rise of certain cultural manifestations attempting to rebuild signs of collective identity, taking the recovery of the Basque language as a starting point. Within a context of crisis of values and future expectations, one part of the Basque youth discovered a form of musical expression in the so called Basque radical rock, having wide social resonance, in which a series of characteristics typical of this musical phenomenon were prominent, in addition to others linking it to the political and cultural situation of the country. In this article we intend to illustrate this phenomenon from a wider perspective, such as popular culture and certain manifestations of literacy and socialisation of one section of the young people.
