Abstract

There are no doubts about the Gaulish origin of the Latín word "carpentum" 'two-wheeled cart'. This paper claims that differences between the Gaulish source "karbanto-", attested in place names as "Carbantorate", and Lat. "carpentum", especially the presence of / p / , are due to the Etruscan role in the borrowing. Textual, historical and cultural information are given in support of the hypothesis.
