Abstract

Four teeth have been recovered in a gravettian level of the cave Aitzbitarte III site (Renteria, Gipuzkoa), which belong to four different individuals (three infants and one adult). Metric analysis show a reduced tooth size, in agreement to the values described for European populations from Late Upper Paleolithic (LUP). This can be related with the technological and cultural changes that took place in LUP when compared to Early Upper Paleolithic (EUP). The permanent molars from Aitzbitarte III show differences in non-metric dental traits referred to the archaic dental pattern, more common in African populations. The expression of non-metric dental traits in Aitzbitarte molars is consistent with the evolutionary process of Homo sapiens along 20.000 years, since the first modern human settlement in Europe.
