Resumen

In this paper we analyze the succession process in SME family firms from Álava and Guipúzcoa. The existing literature regarding this process underlines the great importance of succession planning for the continuity of the family business, but shows that few companies really plan it with time enough. Thus, as new generations appear in the family business, it becomes more necessary to define clear rules of action on issues that will arise in the future and could cause problems. Through a qualitative analysis based on depth interviews on thirty Basque SMEs we have tried to deepen on their succession process to outline the keys to its success, and the main sources of conflict to which they had to face.
