In recent years, organizations have sought an efficient and effective means of management systems (MS). Quality management systems (QMS) and environmental management systems (EMS) are important contributors towards this goal, together with the introduction of more widely known standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The QMS is based on the international standard ISO 9001 and for the case of EMS the ISO 14001 norm represents the standard. Their implementation has led to unprecedented worldwide figures. By the end of 2011, there were over one million (1,111,698) ISO 9001 certificates and more than a quarter million (267,457) organisation were certified in ISO 14001 (ISO, 2012). Based on the previous, the present study aims to analyse and capture present and future trends regarding these standards. An empirical analysis is performed focusing primordially on the pulp and paper industry. The main results show changing trends regarding the future of these standards
