Resumen

Brown bears (Ursus arctos) originated in Asia and diverge from the spelaoid line in the early Middle Pleistocene, but they do not appear in Europe until half million years ago. We make a review of the remains of U. arctosdocumented in the Iberian Peninsula during Middle and Upper Pleistocene, and we present the fossils found in the Middle Pleistocene of Postes cave, Fuentes de León (Badajoz, Extremadura). The bear bearing levels were sealed by an speleothem dated by U/Th in 192,986 +15,451/-13,837 ka BP and yielded 62 cranial and postcranial bones belonging to two adults and decidual teeth ascribed to U. arctos. This site is remarkable due to the scarcity of brown bear remains during Middle Pleistocene, and also for being one of the firsts occurrences in the Iberian Peninsula.
