Abstract

Spanish online newspapers have been paying attention to palm oil for some time. The importance of this product has been linked to the environmental consequences of the intensive plantation of oil palm in certain tropical countries, especially in Southeast Asia. During 2017 there has been a notable increase in the number of insertions related to this oil. At the same time, there has been a change in the approach given to it. The online newspapers are more concerned with the doubts that arise regarding the nutritional characteristics of the palm oil, while the environmental considerations take second place. At the same time, we can see a growth in the texts referring to Spain, compared to those of an international scope. In this research we have analyzed the online editions of El País, El Mundo, Abc and La Vanguardia during 2015, 2016 and the first half of 2017.
