Abstract

The disorder attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a pathology with onset in childhood that may occur along lifetime. The characteristics of the disorder such as inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity and high comorbidity produce important consequences in different areas of personal, social, family and school life. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a group intervention on socio-emotional and behavioral variables in children with ADHD and their parents. For this, we carried out the design, implementation (for ten weeks) and evaluation of a parallel program for children with ADHD and their parents. An experimental design was used with an independent variable with random groups. The sample consisted of seventy people were divided into four groups, two composed of 38 adults (25 in the experimental and 13 control) aged between 32 and 55 years and two groups composed of 32 children (20 in the experimental and 12 control) between 7 and 12 years. The results found indicate that after the intervention parents experienced improvement in levels of perceived emotional intelligence, social skills, psychological well-being, anxiety, self-esteem, family satisfaction and parenting style. Besides, children with ADHD showed improvement in levels of perceived emotional intelligence, anxiety, prosocial behavior, emotional symptoms, hyperactivity, attention and personal, social and school maladjustment. These findings suggest that a group intervention on the family and children with ADHD focused on the development and / or enhancement of social-emotional skills and / or competencies and educational guidelines at home improves the personal, social and family well-being.
