Abstract

The concept of ecosystem service (ES) highlights the close dependence of human well-being on nature. This concept has a high didactic potential, however, the teaching community recognises it as relatively new and its presence in initial teachers’ training is anecdotal. In this study we analyse whether the teaching of this concept in initial teacher training contributes to making visible and valuing the benefits of nature that are not perceived at first sight. The results show that after the ES didactic intervention, pre-service teachers value ES that they did not visualise before, helping them to broaden their view of the problem of biodiversity loss and stimulating critical thinking. These results reinforce the importance of including the teaching of ES in initial teacher training, as the scientific literacy of citizens depends largely on primary school teachers.
