Abstract

This research focuses on gender inequities in academic achievement in Basque language. A census study is presented to analyze the degree to which middle schools in the Basque Autonomous Community (B.A.C.) reducegender differences in learning the Basque language, a minority language in the country. The 8th-grade middle school students who completed the Diagnostic Evaluation (D.E) in three different years (year 2015, 2017 and 2019) participated in this study. A regression analysis was used to identify that 10.5% of the centers managed to break the gender gap in Basque language, in which there are both high and low effective schools. The discourses of 14 professionals from these equitable centers are analyzed qualitatively. Results indicate that although professionals indicate that there is some progress in specific awareness-raising actions, coeducation still needs to be addressed from a school perspective and also related to academic performance in order to offer students future academicand work opportunities free of gender conditions
