Abstract

In the area of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning different approaches have been proposed for analysing the communication and learning that takes place in online discussion boards. None of them stands out as the most commonly accepted method of analysis. The primary differences between them are in the underlying pedagogical approach. One characteristic they all have in common is the individual perspective. However, in real-world collaborative work the type of cooperation displayed by team members influences the final outcome. A team's efficiency can depend on the distribution of functional roles among the members. In any event, this is an additional element to consider when evaluating work or learning outcomes. This paper describes a methodology for analysing online discussion boards for the purpose of determining the type of roles established within a team.
