Abstract
This thesis aims to present the shaping of the landscape during the Roman period in a territory located on one of the main trans-Pyrenean axes in the western area. The research has been based on the archaeological study of the most important settlements in the area, taking into account various sources of information of an environmental landscape nature and the historical, numismatic or epigraphic sources available in the territory. In this regard, the so-called agglomération secondaire or small towns have been studied in depth, which, as in other peripheral environments similar to the Pyrenean area, would play a crucial role in articulating the different resources and elements of the territory. At the same time, these enclaves would be located around the main land communication routes, becoming the principal axes in the spatial organisation of the study area. Therefore, by means of the categorisation and subsequent chronological historical contextualisation, it has been possible to identify different historical, economic, administrative and social dynamics that have affected the development of the studied zone in a generalised manner. Likewise, the working hypothesis developed in this doctoral thesis will allow us to continue to break with the territorial historiographical current around the term used by Pliny the Elder of the Vascon saltus. All of this offers a renewed vision of the impact of the Roman period in this peripheral and mountainous environment of the western Circum-Pyrenean area.
