Abstract

Music and Mathematics are universal and abstract languages that have always been related throughout history; indeed, Mathematics have had a great importance in the advances in Music. Music is expressed through sound and, from the mathematical point of view, sounds are waves. In this article we shall introduce some examples of this relationship. To do so, we will take into account the classification of musical instruments, study the peculiarities of each family, and express them in mathematical language. We will also analyze the problems that are satisfied by the waves each sound produces, and we will give their solutions explicitly. The essential tools to achieve these solutions will be the wave equation, Fourier series and Bessel functions, among others.
