Résumé

The advance of the Bourbon reforms was not exempt of resistances, open opposition and profound limitations. In that situation, some voices emerged from the colonial and even metropolitan charges to avoid independentist rebellion that could cause a radical breakup in the relation between Spain and its colonies. These proposals which were based in the negotiation of a series of controlled independencies, aimed to guarantee the access to the colonial markets for Spain in advantageous conditions and ensure a political and military primacy over them without an effective occupation. The outbreak of the war against Napoleonic France in the peninsula and thewars of independence in America rescued this projects, both between the more moderate creoles and the more radical peninsular. Its utilitarian and liberal principles match with what historians such as Gregory Burton and David Todd had considered the bases for the imperial expansion of the United Kingdom and France as new liberal states.
