Climate projections indicate that glaciers in the Pyrenees will disappear in the middle of the 21st century. This work analyses how the disappearance of the glaciers of Aneto and Maladeta can affect the non-material (cultural) Nature’s Contributions to People (NCP), comparing the importance and contributions of glaciers and of the same landscape without glaciers in 2020 and 2050. Several non-material contributions of the Aneto and Maladeta glaciers have been defined in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park (PMNP), taking into account the classification of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). A study was developed through a survey of 121 people knowledgeable about the PMNP. In turn, the impact of glaciers on the local landscape has been inferred through calculations of visual basins using a GIS. The results show that between 2020 and 2050, the importance of non-material contributions from glaciers will decrease especially in physical and psychological experiences in the glacial environment, as well as in knowledge and inspiration, due to the loss of a geographic element of great scientific and educational value. Finally, we discuss the possible consequences of the disappearance of glaciers, the attractiveness of the PMNP, the flow of visitors and the valley economy, and the importance of implementing adaptation strategies that guarantee resilience in the context of global change.
