Abstract

The objective of this study is to present the interelationships between orthodontic ans speech therapy treatments in cleft lip/palate patients, pointing the need of team work. Emphasizing the importance of promoting correct respiratory and deglutory habits for the correct orthodontic/speech rehabilitation of these patients. Patients ami methods: Prospective study of 66 non syndromic cleft lip/palate or cleft palate patients, older than 4 years. The evaluation includes type of breath: oral or nasal, corporal posture: correct or incorrect, type of phonatory, deglutory and lingual habits. All patients were evaluated conjointly by speech therapist, surgeon and orthodontist. Results: In 56% of the patiens the type of breath was oral and 42.4% had incorrect corporal posture, the association between both factors was statistically significant (p<0.001). In 45.5 % of the patients the type of deglutition was atypical, in which 12 % had abnormal deglutition with upper incisives lingual contact, 18.2 % lingual interdental contact and 15.2% with lower incisives lingual contact. The occlusion was normal in 60.6% of the cases, 15% had anterior open byte, 10.6% anterior crossbite and 10.6% edge to edge anterior byte. The relationship between type of deglutition with the occlusal alteration was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusions: The promotion of correct respiratory and deglutory habits by teamwork are important in cleft lip and palate patients rehabilitation.
