Zusammenfassung
As a result of present migratory flows, students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds are attending our classrooms, most of them ignore the language(s) of the host country. The paper underlines the fact that there is a wealth of knowledge about L2 teaching-learning that primarily comes from research work on immigrant children in different parts of the world. It is however paradoxical that this knowledge finds it so difficult to reach those in charge in the classrooms of these very students. Among teaching staff there are wrong or confused notions related among others to the nature of the subject itself, the educational programme, the learning processes, the texts, and the language object of study. The present paper questions teachers' notions based on sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and educational criteria that can help educators improve how linguistic diversity is treated in the classroom.
