Zusammenfassung

Studies on historical demography within the framework of Basque historiography have undergone notable changes in recent decades. To take stock of these, on the one hand, and to analyse more deeply the spaces and spheres that were unknown or marginalized until recently in this historical territory, on the other, are the challenges posed in this article. The analytical and methodological tools employed allowed the author to reach some conclusions concerning the strengths and weaknesses of Basque historical demography, its central lines of research and new topics of analysis. Moreover, the inclusion of new aspects regarding economic activity, the make-up of the nuclear family and the «casería» make it possible for the author to present an articulated proposal capable of integrating aspects relating to demography and the family within the globalizing framework of the economic, social, and political spheres together with the mentality and practices of daily life.
