Zusammenfassung

Although the ECDIS system was intended to improve navigation safety and operational efficiency, reality shows that numerous “ECDIS assisted” groundings are occurring in the transition from paper charts to ECDIS. This suggests that operators needs were not considered at the time the system was designed. In this respect, a survey was carried out, using both quantitative and qualitative methods, to find out the needs, opinions and preferences of mariners regarding the operation of ECDIS. The findings put forward that, in order to perform a safe navigation, the introduction of improvements in ECDIS training and design, in response to users’ needs, becomes essential.
