Résumé

This exploratory article suggests that there may be hidden KIBS nested within the economic and business fabric of territories. A novel, original concept is proposed that goes beyond the conventional literature on advanced services. A qualitative case study turns the spotlight on the technological capabilities of «hidden champions» and analyses the role of internationalised SMEs that take on KIBS functions without actually being KIBS organisations in the framework of regional innovation systems. That study reveals that the configuration of certain technological capabilities enables these firms to update their human capital skills in their business context and facilitate smart specialisation in their value chains, generating new economic activities and possibilities for employment based on intensive knowledge.
