Résumé

Mining in the Basque Country has always been of great importance, of capital interest in the case of iron mining. It was fundamentally centralized in the Mining District of Bilbao or Bilbao Iron Seam (which extends from Galdakao in the province of Bizkaia, to Peña Cabarga, already in the Autonomous Community in Cantabria). It showed a very long-time activity, beginning in Roman times and showing continuous until the end of the 20th century. The intense mining brought with it the development of an important mining slang, being very varied in the case of minerals, previously to the development of modern mineralogy. This local slang was used by miners and mining companies, and its use has been preserved until recently, representing a fundamental part of intangible mining heritage.
